Italian government approves bank bailout: PM

The Italian cabinet approved a bailout plan Friday to help the country's struggling banks, notably Monte dei Paschi di Siena (BMPS), Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni said.

The announcement comes after Monte dei Paschi, the world's oldest bank, earlier said it had failed in a bid to raise five billion euros ($5.22 billion) from the markets to shore up its capital base.
