Kazakhstan confirms the detention of two citizens in the U.S. over billion-dollar health insurance fraud

Tengrinews.kz – The Kazakhstan Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed the detention of two Kazakh citizens in the United States for their involvement in a fraud scheme involving the Medicare and Medigap health insurance programs, amounting to over 1 billion dollars.
What the Ministry said
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed that Kazakhstan was notified by the U.S. law enforcement about the detention of its citizens.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is aware of the detention of the individuals mentioned in your inquiry. The Kazakh side was informed of this fact by U.S. law enforcement. The Kazakhstan Consulate General in New York is in constant contact with the American side regarding this matter," the ministry’s response to the editorial inquiry stated.

The ministry also noted that the detained individuals' relatives have not yet contacted Kazakhstan's diplomatic missions regarding the issue.
What happened
Earlier, it was reported that in Chicago, two Kazakh citizens were charged for involvement in multi-level fraud schemes related to the Medicare and Medigap U.S. health insurance programs.
According to the U.S. federal prosecutors, the case concerns fake claims for medical equipment and diagnostic services amounting to over 1 billion dollars. In one of the charges, a Kazakh citizen, A.A., is accused of conspiring to launder money obtained through fraud involving the Medicare program.
In the second case, the federal prosecutors charge another Kazakh citizen, T.S., residing in the Chicago area, with conspiracy to launder money related to a medical insurance program.
