Blizzard, fog, ice: storm warning issued across Kazakhstan

Tengrinews.kz – A storm warning has been issued for all of Kazakhstan on 20 February: a cold snap is expected in the north, while the south will see fog and the aftereffects of thawing, according to Kazhydromet.

Astana – Fog is expected at night and in the morning.

Almaty – From 20 to 23 February 2026, due to the significant thickness and unstable condition of the snow cover, as well as thawing in the basins of the Ulken and Kishi Almaty rivers, there remains a danger of snow avalanches.

Shymkent – Fog is expected at night and in the morning. South-easterly wind shifting to south-westerly, with gusts of 15–20 m/s.

Almaty Region – At night and in the morning in the north, south and mountainous areas of the region, fog is expected. Westerly wind shifting to easterly, with gusts of 15–20 m/s in the south and mountainous areas.

Zhetysu Region – At night and in the morning in the central and mountainous areas of the region, fog is expected. North-easterly wind in the Alakol lakes area, with gusts of 15–20 m/s, at times 23–28 m/s. In Taldykorgan, fog is expected at night and in the morning.

Aktobe Region – Precipitation, blizzard and ice are expected; in the west and north of the region, heavy precipitation (mainly snow). During the day, precipitation (rain, snow), ice, and in the north, east and central parts of the region, blowing snow. Fog in the west, south and east. South-easterly wind shifting to south-westerly at night 15–20 m/s, in the north and central parts with gusts of 23–28 m/s; during the day in the north, east and centre 15–20 m/s, at times 23–28 m/s in the central part. In Aktobe – Snow is expected, at times heavy snow and blizzard at night. Ice. South-easterly wind shifting to south-westerly, with night gusts of 15–20 m/s.

Ulytau Region – In the morning and during the day in the west and north of the region, precipitation (rain, snow) and blowing snow are expected. Fog and ice in the north, east and central parts of the region. North-easterly, easterly wind, with gusts of 15–20 m/s in the west, north and centre. In Zhezkazgan – Ice is expected during the day. North-easterly, easterly wind, with gusts of 15 m/s.

Karaganda Region – Icy conditions on the roads are expected. Fog in the north, south and east of the region. North-easterly, easterly wind, with gusts of 15–20 m/s in the west and south. In Karaganda – Icy conditions on the roads are expected.

Abai Region – At night in the east, south and central parts of the region, snow is expected, at times heavy snow, blizzard and ice. Fog in the west of the region. North-westerly, northerly wind 15–20 m/s in the east, south and central parts, with night gusts up to 23 m/s.

Kyzylorda Region – At night in the north of the region, ice is expected. Fog in the central, northern and southern parts. North-easterly wind 15–20 m/s in the north and centre.In Kyzylorda – Occasional fog is expected.

Kostanay Region – During the day in the west and south of the region, precipitation (rain, snow), blizzard and ice are expected. Fog in the west, north and east. North-easterly, easterly wind 15–20 m/s in the west, south and east. In Kostanay – Fog is expected.

East Kazakhstan Region – At night, snow, blizzard and ice are expected; in the east and south of the region, at times heavy snow. During the day in the north and east – light snow, blowing snow and ice. Fog in the east of the region. Westerly, north-westerly wind 15–20 m/s in the north, south and centre, with night gusts up to 23 m/s. In Ust-Kamenogorsk – In the first half of the night, snow, blizzard and ice are expected. North-westerly wind at night, with gusts of 15–18 m/s.

Zhambyl Region – Occasional fog is expected. South-westerly wind shifting to north-easterly 15–20 m/s in the southwest, northeast and mountainous areas, with night gusts up to 25 m/s.

Atyrau Region – Precipitation (rain, snow), blowing snow and ice are expected; at night in the north of the region, heavy precipitation (rain, snow). Fog in the west and south of the region.
