January retail sales were a beat. 

Excluding autos and gas sales rose 0.4% in January compared to the prior month, beating expectations for a 0.3% increase. 

The retail sales control group — which includes items included in the personal consumption expenditures component of the GDP report — increase 0.6% in January, better than the 0.3% increase that was expected. 

So overall, a strong report and the latest evidence that we're not heading towards recession.

Virginia officials monitor roads with snow in forecast

WASHINGTON (AP) — Virginia transportation officials say they're keeping an eye on road conditions as light snow showers are expected to move into the Richmond area. The Virginia Department of Transportation said in a news release Friday morning that crews are ready to deploy to treat icy patches with salt and sand. Officials say there could be accumulations of snow ranging from a trace up to an inch in areas to the south and east during the day Friday. Some school systems in the area are closing early because of the expected snow.

Water main break causes icy mess in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A water main break in West Philadelphia is causing an icy mess and disrupting traffic and mass transit. Philadelphia's water department says a line from a water main to a fire hydrant broke early Friday morning near 63rd Street and Haverford Avenue. Cars along the street are encased in ice as temperatures hover around 18 degrees. The streets are a slick mix of ice, slush and water. Some trolley service remains suspended and motorists are advised to avoid the area as workers try to fix the break.
