Obama To Designate 3 New National Monuments Covering 1.8 Million Acres Of California Desert

U.S. President Barack Obama will designate three new national monuments in the California desert Friday, expanding federal protection to 1.8 million acres of landscapes in the region. The designation, requested by U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein, will cover land that wasn't included in the 1994 California Desert Protection Act, and connect three existing sites — Death Valley, Joshua Tree national parks and the Mojave National Preserve — to create one of the world’ largest desert preserves.

Amazon just acquired an Italy-based software developer

(Reuters) - Amazon Web Services, the cloud computing arm of Amazon.com Inc, said it has acquired NICE, a software developer for technical computing.

The company said it has signed an agreement with NICE, which is also a cloud computing firm, and expects the deal to close in the first quarter of 2016.

No financial terms were disclosed.

Italy-based NICE has customers in industries ranging from aerospace to industrial, energy and utilities.

Fairbanks debates federal proposal on Alaska predator hunts

Senate gives initial OK to small photo radar ban

PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Senate has given initial approval to a bill banning photo radar on state highways that will affect just two cities. The Arizona League of Cities and Towns opposes the measure, saying the cameras slow down drivers in areas where police cannot safely pull them over.
