Yale First Nation puts hold on treaty implementation

B.C.’s troubled treaty process has been dealt another major blow with the announcement Thursday by a tiny First Nation along the Fraser River that it is suspending implementation of its agreement. The Yale First Nation is one of a handful of First Nations to complete negotiations with the federal and B.C. governments since the costly process began in 1992.

Cops trying to identify human remains found near Gilroy

A set of skeletal remains was discovered Wednesday outside of Gilroy by a Pacific Gas and Electric Co. crew working in the area, authorities said Thursday The remains were found near the intersection of Santa Teresa Boulevard and Castro Valley Road in unincorporated Santa Clara County, said Sgt. James Jensen, a spokesman for the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators do not believe they are those of missing teen Sierra Lamar, officials said.

Plane crashes in B.C. up 40 per cent from 2014

Seven people were killed and four seriously injured in aircraft accidents in B.C. last year, while the number of crashes topped 43, according to new Transportation Safety Board statistics provided to The Sun. Although the number of accidents represent a 40-per-cent increase over 2014, it compares favourably with the five-year average of 45.

UDI/Vancity Housing Affordability Index: Statistics show homes getting even further out of reach for most

Despite the lowest interest rates in memory, Vancouver houses continue to become less and less affordable, the UDI/Vancity Housing Affordability Index shows. That’s because prices just keep going up. The average best five-year mortgage rate from the eight big banks averaged just 3.06 per cent for the fourth quarter of 2015, down from 3.15 per cent the previous quarter. TD Bank notably dropped its best five-year rate to just 2.94 per cent.
