Christie seeks federal relief for January snowstorm

3 killed in attack on customs post in central Mali

BAMAKO, Mali (AP) — Mali's Defense Ministry and a witness say three people have been killed in the central Mopti region by armed men attacking a customs post. The Mopti region is known to be a stronghold for the Macina Liberation Front, an Islamic extremist group that claimed responsibility for several attacks on the army last year.

Obama nominates John King as education secretary

President Barack Obama will nominate John King to be secretary of the Department of Education, the White House said Thursday. King, currently acting secretary of the department, would replace Arne Duncan, who stepped down in December. King's nomination would have to be confirmed by the Senate.
