John McCain on Friday called for additional assistance to countries along the Balkan migrant corridor and expressed hope for an end to wars in Syria and Afghanistan fueling the refugee crisis. McCain, a Republican from Arizona, traveled with a Congressional delegation to a Serbian border town where thousands of refugees pass daily on their way toward Western Europe. Refugees travel through Serbia and other Balkan countries before reaching wealthy European nations such as Germany or Sweden.

Zika virus has been discovered in the placentas of at least two American women who contracted the virus while traveling and miscarried after their return to the United States, the chief pathologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told STAT on Wednesday.

The finding adds to a growing mound of evidence that Zika infection during pregnancy can pass from the mother to the fetus she carries.
