Sunday Morning Bobblehead Thread

Crooks and Liars

I'm assuming the events in Dallas this week will overtake presidential politics for at least one weekend on the Sunday talking head shows, but don't expect any announcements from Republicans that we'll be holding hearings on police shootings any time in the near future, or for any of them to veer from their NRA approved talking points and admit that heaven forbid maybe the fact that this country is flooded with guns might be part of the problem with these mass killings.

Why anti-Israel BDS activism deserves special treatment by lawmakers

Los Angeles Times (latimes.com)

To the editor: While I agree that free speech should include the right to criticize and even boycott Israel, I dispute that the anti-BDS bill by state Assemblyman Richard Boom (D-Santa Monica) is an infringement on that right. (“Boycotts of Israel are a protected form of free speech,” editorial,...

We don't go to casinos to win or lose, but to break even together

Los Angeles Times (latimes.com)

More than 30 million people gambled at Las Vegas casinos last year, trying their luck at cards, dice, slots and wheels on average for three hours a day. That’s a staggering number. Why travel to a casino with so many forms of betting easily found online? Why gamble at all when there are so many...

Imagining a female Camp David: Less tetherball, more SoulCycle

Los Angeles Times (latimes.com)

There’s a spectacular summer getaway in rural Maryland that, by federal decree, doesn’t show up on maps. Appointed with a gleaming fitness center and a chapel, and manned by a congenial if armed security force, this woodsy hideout has historically offered bowling, skeet-shooting, sledding, horseshoes...

Our nation must be pro-police and pro-shooting victims

Los Angeles Times (latimes.com)

To the editor: The Dallas police shooting is a national tragedy, and the nation has to take action without taking sides. We shouldn’t be either “for” the police or “for” the victims of police shootings. (“Police officers resentful, afraid and less motivated after Dallas massacre, Gardena chief...

Dallas gunman learned tactics at Texas self-defense school

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

DALLAS (AP) — The gunman who killed five police officers at a protest march had practiced military-style drills in his yard and trained at a private self-defense school that teaches special tactics, including "shooting on the move," a maneuver in which an attacker fires and changes position before firing again. Authorities have said the 25-year-old gunman kept a journal of combat tactics and had amassed a personal arsenal at his home, including bomb-making materials, rifles and ammunition. "Reality is highly dynamic... Читать дальше...

Old bones cast new light on Goliath's people

Yahoo Autos

With an excavation in southern Israel unearthing a Philistine cemetery for the first time, bones of the biblical giant 's people can finally shed new light on mysteries of their culture. Some of the site's finds were going on display Sunday at the Rockefeller Archaeological Museum in Jerusalem. Almost three millennia since the Philistines were wiped off the face of the earth by Babylonian armies, a US archaeologist was hard at work crouched in one of their funerary chambers at the excavation in the Mediterranean city of Ashkelon.
