Former judge of Karnataka High Court Michael Francis Saldanha has expressed concern at unscientific means of fishing adopted along the coast of Karnataka. While traditional fishing methods help in survival of fish species and their long term availability, modern methods of fishing such as purse seine will result in extermination of a large variety of sea life needlessly and this will affect the marine eco-system where all varieties have to co-exist, he said.

Former correspondent of The New York Times Sydney Hillel Schanberg died Saturday at the age of 82 in Poughkeepsie, New York . He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of the genocide in Cambodia in 1975. His death was confirmed by former Times reporter Charles Kaiser, who said Schanberg had a heart attack Tuesday, the newspaper reported.
