Applications for US jobless benefits rose slightly last week

WASHINGTON — More Americans applied for unemployment benefits last week, but jobless claims remained at levels consistent with a healthy labor market. THE NUMBERS: The Labor Department said Thursday that claims rose by 1,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 260,000. Applications have come in below 300,000 for 80 straight weeks, longest streak since 1970.

Producer prices were unchanged in August

The producer price index (PPI) for final demand was unchanged in August, according to the Labor Department.

Economists had forecast an increase by 0.1% month-on-month, according to Bloomberg. 

Prices for final demand services edged up 0.1% while those for final demand goods fell 0.4%.

Core PPI, which excludes volatile food and energy costs, rose 0.1% month-on-month, matching expectations.

US retail sales slump 0.3 percent, ending 4 months of gains

Empire Fed manufacturing rises less than expected

The Empire State Manufacturing index rose slightly to -2.0 in September.

The reading on manufacturing in New York fell short of expectations, economists has expected it to come in at -1.0.

The index is still stronger than August, however, when it unexpectedly slumped to -4.2.

The index has fluctuated between positive and negative since pushing into expansion for the first time in eight months in March.
