The Raghubar Das government and the opposition adopted contradictory views on the amendments brought to the century-old tribal land protection laws. Certain sections of the Chotanagpur Tenancy (CNT) Act -1908 and Santhal Pargana Tenancy (SPT) Act 1949 were amended by the government under the CNT and SPT Amendment bill-2016 on Wednesday, to allow non-agricultural use of land by the owner, without transfer of ownership.

Security personnel resorted to lathi-charge, tear shells and water cannons to disperse an opposition rally protesting the bill.
