Apparent strike on Gaza tunnels kills 2 Palestinians

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — An explosion killed two Palestinians along the Gaza border with Egypt on Thursday in what appeared to be a strike on cross-border smuggling tunnels. Palestinian civil defense workers recovered the bodies and the wounded and transferred them to hospitals in the southern Gaza Strip. On Wednesday, the military said its missile defense system intercepted several rockets fired by militants in Egypt toward the southern Israeli city of Eilat — a relatively rare occurrence.

Man sleeping in trash bin rescued from garbage truck

(AP) — Authorities in Florida say a man who had been sleeping in a commercial trash bin is recovering after nearly being crushed in the back of a garbage truck. Police say the operator of a Waste Management truck had just dumped one load into the back of his truck outside a Dollar General store and was about to dump a second when he heard someone yelling for help.

Founder: Police close Egyptian center for torture victims

CAIRO (AP) — The founder of an Egyptian center that treats victims of torture and trauma says the institution has been closed down by police. Prominent psychiatrist Dr. Aida Seif el-Dawla tells The Associated Press that when staff arrived at the Al-Nadeem Center for Rehabilitation of Victims of Violence on Thursday the facility had been sealed off by police and the building's doorman taken into custody for questioning.
