MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut State Police have arrested six more staff members at a maximum-security psychiatric hospital in connection with the repeated abuse of a patient. A total of nine workers are now charged with cruelty to persons and disorderly conduct. Authorities on Tuesday night announced the new arrests of workers at the Whiting Forensic Division of Connecticut Valley Hospital in Middletown. 'Potentially Catastrophic' Hurricane Irma Takes Aim at Caribbean Islands

Hurricane Irma approached the Virgin Islands on Wednesday as it continued to unleash its Category 5 winds, life-threatening storm surges, and dangerous flooding on the Caribbean region. The U.S. National Hurricane Center said the "potentially catastrophic" storm, which packed sustained winds of 295 kilometers per hour (183 miles per hour), would reach the area around Puerto Rico by Wednesday night. Six officials have been appointed to run the new vote ordered by the Supreme Court after it nullified President Uhuru Kenyatta's re-election, a statement by commission Chairman Wafula Chebukati said Tuesday. U.S. stocks inch higher as investors watch Hurricane Irma

U.S. stock-market indexes opened slightly higher on Wednesday, bouncing from losses during the previous session, which were sparked by worries over North Korea. Gains were limited, however, as investors kept an eye on a potentially destructive Hurricane Irma. The category 5 Hurricane has made a landfall in northeastern Caribbean islands and could potentially hit Florida, where a state of emergency has been declared.
