|||Johannesburg – Four-time Major champion Ernie Els will be joining the field in the Joburg Open as the tournament celebrates its 10th anniversary.
Els was player-host of the BMW South African Open Championship, which ended on Sunday.
Els was added to the field by invitation at the weekend and will be making his first appearance in the tournament which starts on Thursday at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club, ahead of his trip to the Middle East to play on The European Tour’s desert swing.
Although Els missed the cut at the SA Open, he said he had found something to work with in his putting, and was keen to test it in tournament conditions ahead of playing in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship.
“I’m really excited to get the putting working well in tournament play again,” said Els, “and it will be great to be able to do it in front of South African fans at a tournament as prestigious as the Joburg Open.”
Els will be up against the likes of defending champion Andy Sullivan, who also missed the cut at the SA Open, and former champions Richard Sterne and George Coetzee.
