Mechanical failure, drugs didn’t cause San Jose bus crash
An investigation into last month’s rollover bus crash in San Jose that killed two people revealed the 58-year-old driver had no drugs or alcohol in his system and that mechanical failure did not cause the fatal collision, officials announced Thursday.
The driver’s preliminary toxicology test results were negative for alcohol and illicit drugs, National Transportation Safety Board officials said in a preliminary report.
The latest probe on the Jan. 19 Greyhound bus crash on Highway 101 that killed two women and injured 12 other passengers on detailed how the wreck occurred.
[...] officials left the probable cause field in the report blank, apart from the statement, “This accident is currently under investigation and the probable cause will be determined at a later date.”
A passenger told media immediately after the crash that the bus driver, Gary Bonslater, had pulled over before the wreck because he was tired.
When the bus crashed near the Highway 85 flyover, Bonslater had the option of driving in a freeway high-occupancy vehicle lane or the main travel lanes.
