Family feud turns deadly after son murders father for beating his mother
– A 25-year-old man in Akwa Ibom state has been charged with murdering his father.
– He confessed to bludgeoning his father about the head after he began to beat his mother.
– The father had allegedly physically abused both his wife and son on previous occasions.
Police spokesperson Cordelia Nwawe for Akwa Ibom state command has disclosed that a 25-year-old-man, Effiong Mfreke, has confessed to murdering his father.
Mfreke, who is from Ikot Akpainyang Asutan village in the Ibesikpo/Asutan local government area of the state, killed his father, Mr. Archibong Effiong after he started to beat his wife following a heated argument.
Mfreke, who said he was attacked by his father with a broken bottle after trying to help his mother, picked up a plank with which he used to hit his father on the head, bludgeoning him to death.

“The young man murdered his father by using a plank to hit him on his head,” Cordelia said.
“The young man will be charged in court after the investigation has been concluded.”
Speaking to reporters, Mfreke said he had returned from the family’s farm and found his parents quarrelling.
He said it did not take him long to realise that his father was at fault.

“My mother and father have been having issues. My father has not been feeding me; I cut palm fruit to feed myself,” he said.
“On Monday, at about 6pm, I returned home and met my father and mother quarrelling and fighting.
“I asked my mother what the problem was and she told me. My father came out and saw me; he threw a bottle at me and hit me with a plank,” he said.
“I was annoyed and I took the same plank and hit him back; he slumped and the next thing I heard was that he was dead,”

Mfreke has been taken into policy custody and charged with one count of murder.
The maximum penalty for murder remains the death penalty, however as Mfreke confessed he most likely faces a long spell in prison.
