Warriors’ Thompson plays Robin to Curry’s Batman
TORONTO - If you talk to Klay Thompson in a moment of honesty, he’ll tell you that he believes he is the NBA’s best two-way shooting guard.
When President Barack Obama said last week that Thompson’s jump shot is “sweeter” than that of Stephen Curry, Thompson nodded in agreement.
[...] Thompson’s relaxed personality has allowed him to become the perfect sidekick to the superhero role in which Curry shines.
Curry was selected an All-Star starter by the fans and immediately thanked the millions for voting.
Draymond Green was tabbed an All-Star reserve by the Western Conference coaches and did a celebratory TV hit and a conference call.
“He plays Robin the best as any Robin in the league right now,” said TNT analyst Reggie Miller, who led Indiana in scoring nine times and deferred to Jermaine O’Neal, Chuck Person, Jalen Rose and Rik Smits in nine other seasons for the Pacers.
Thompson defends some point guards to save Curry for his ball-handling and decision-making responsibilities on offense.
Thompson spreads the floor and draws enough attention on offense that opponents’ entire game plans can’t be centered on slowing Curry.
Curry has scored fewer than 20 points 10 times this season (two games missed because of a shin contusion), and in those games, Thompson lifted his scoring from 21.3 points to 26.3, his field-goal shooting from 46.9 percent to 51.3 and his three-point shooting from 42 percent to 48.1.
Thompson doesn’t particularly like doing interviews, but in his fifth NBA season, he’s learned to use his answers to further solidify his background role.
