Stanford’s Hogan to K.C.; Packers take Martinez, Murphy
Three Stanford players — quarterback Kevin Hogan, linebacker Blake Martinez and offensive tackle Kyle Murphy — will say farewell to the West Coast and hello to the Midwest.
Hogan was picked by Kansas City in the fifth round of the NFL draft Saturday.
Hogan, the 162nd overall pick, is expected to be the Chiefs’ No. 3 quarterback in 2016 as Aaron Murray and Tyler Bray duel for the backup spot behind Alex Smith.
The Chiefs reportedly had hoped to draft quarterback Paxton Lynch in the first round but traded out of the No. 28 spot after Denver took Lynch at No. 26.
In a pick announced by Jerry Kramer, a five-time All-Pro guard for Vince Lombardi’s Packers in the 1950s and ’60s, Green Bay chose Martinez with a compensatory pick that was the 131st overall selection.
[...] the Packers were impressed by his instincts and production; he led the Pac-12 in tackles last season.
The Packers would like to move six-time Pro Bowler Clay Matthews to the outside, which could free the middle linebacker spot for Martinez.
Martinez attributed the selection to my dedication and drive every single day to improve on the fundamentals.
There were concerns about Martinez’s quickness, but he reportedly ran a 4.20-second 20-yard shuttle at the NFL combine, the second fastest time of any inside linebacker.
Among the undrafted were wide receiver Devon Cajuste, defensive linemen Aziz Shittu and Brennan Scarlett, running back Remound Wright, linebacker Kevin Anderson and safety Kodi Whitfield.
