Gray better, but Mariners beat A’s 8-2
Yes, Sonny Gray surrendered two more home runs.
With runners at the corners, Adam Lind hit a popup behind shortstop that left fielder Khris Davis admitted he should have caught.
The misplay ended Gray’s night, and Kyle Seager then clubbed a three-run homer off Marc Rzepczynski.
The A’s had just six hits, four off starter Hisashi Iwakuma, who pitched seven innings, and couldn’t seem to avoid the defensive vacuum that is Seattle shortstop Ketel Marte.
Davis did hit his third homer in two nights (and sixth in 14 games) in the ninth inning.
Iwakuma’s been struggling some, leaving some balls up, and we weren’t able to take advantage of a guy that wasn’t pitching too terribly well.
Gray was far better than in his previous start, a two-inning stinker in Detroit.
[...] the eighth, the difference was Martin’s two-run homer in the third.
The Mariners will pursue a sweep in Wednesday’s matinee with Felix Hernandez on the mound.
The A’s will counter with left-hander Sean Manaea, who’ll make his second big-league start after a decent debut against Houston on Friday.
