49ers’ 6th-round QB Driskel: Closer to a Brady or Rusty?
49ers’ 6th-round QB Driskel:
Tom Brady is the poster boy for Sixth-Round Quarterbacks, but he’s not the only one to morph from draft afterthought to established starter.
Brady headlines a group that includes another Super Bowl MVP (Mark Rypien), a three-time Pro Bowler (Matt Hasselbeck) and others who had productive NFL careers (Marc Bulger, Jeff Blake, Rodney Peete, Stan Humphries, Steve Bono).
The 49ers hope that group will one day include Jeff Driskel, the Louisiana Tech quarterback they took in the sixth round Saturday with the No. 207 pick.
[...] despite the success stories, Driskel faces long odds.
Of the 80 quarterbacks selected in the sixth round since 1970, 30 have never thrown an NFL pass, 45 have thrown fewer than 50 passes and 40 have never made a start.
The three other quarterbacks the 49ers have drafted in the sixth round in franchise history?
Driskel does have first-round traits, most notably his size (6-foot-4, 231 pounds) and speed.
At the combine, his 4.56 40-yard dash was the fastest among quarterbacks.
[...] after his transfer to Louisiana Tech, there are reasons why he ranked just fifth in Conference USA in completion percentage (62.4).
Driskel was the 14th quarterback off the board, at least partly because of questions about his accuracy and pocket presence.
[...] his sixth-round predecessors - Brady, Rypien, Hasselbeck etc. - also arrived in the NFL surrounded by serious question marks, which they eventually answered.
Eight of the 80 quarterbacks drafted in the sixth round since 1970 have been on a Pro Bowl roster:
Anderson and Taylor weren’t voted to a Pro Bowl, but went as alternates.
Eight of the 80 quarterback drafted in the sixth round since 1970 have 10,000 career passing yards:
Four of the 80 quarterbacks drafted in the sixth round since 1970 have started a Super Bowl:
Tom Brady’s record as a starter: 172-51 (.771).
QBs the 49ers have selected in the sixth round in franchise history:
Rusty Clark, Houston (0 NFL games)
Scott Barry, UC Davis (0 NFL games)
Jeff Driskel, Louisiana Tech
