People rendered homeless by Lagos govt construction works recount losses
– Displaced residents lament government neglect
– Plead with the Lagos state government to come to their aid
Some residents of Abiola in Oke-Ira area of Ogba, Lagos have expressed their grievances towards the Lagos state government over the demolition of their houses by some contractors.
The residents who spoke with NAIJ.com accused the state government of rendering them homeless for the past eight years.
While speaking with NAIJ.com’s Godday Akoh, the residents claimed that the Lagos state government had awarded the bridge and roads in the area to a construction company which visited the site, and allegedly pulled down some buildings in the area.

The company’s excuse, the people said, was to repair their bad roads and construct a bridge for residents of the area.
According to them, many homes have been destroyed over the years in the process and our correspondent gathered that the project had been abandoned for years after the construction company had destroyed properties worth millions of naira.
One of the residents said: “8 years have passed and nothing has been done. They added that the place has been turned to a refuse bin and flood has destroyed the area.”
Speaking also with this medium, another resident who identified herself as Tosin, attested that the project has been abandoned for eight years.
“The work was awarded to AY construction company by the local government but it was abandoned. In fact, my sitting room and church were affected and divided by the demolition,” she said.
In a similar vein, Dennis Pedro, who also lives in the area, informed that “the place is nothing to write home about and the residents of the place now have no option than to pack out of the uncompleted buildings.
He also explained that the state government’s efforts to repair the roads have rendered many homeless.
“They wanted to repair the road and make a bridge linking Ifako, Obawole, Ishaga, and Fagba road but instead they made us homeless and put us in sorrow that we were not expecting,” Pedro lamented.
Like other residents, Tosin has beckoned on the state government to come to their aid and save them from their state of homelessness.
