Bruce Bochy on Willie Mays, Tim Lincecum, plus Giants’ roster moves
Two of the icons of the franchise — Willie Mays and Tim Lincecum — were major parts of manager Bruce Bochy’s pregame news conference Friday afternoon.
Mays, he of the 660 career home runs, was celebrating his 85th birthday at AT&T Park.
Bochy, now in his 10th season as the Giants’ manager, talked about Mays’ passion for the game.
Bochy saw video of the two-time Cy Young Award winner’s “showcase” in Arizona on Friday afternoon.
Bochy didn’t do much evaluating of the session other than to say Lincecum, who’s coming back from hip surgery, looked healthy.
After he gave up nine runs (seven earned) in one-third of an inning Thursday night in his second appearance with San Francisco, Mazzaro was designated for assignment Friday.
The Giants selected the contract of right-hander Albert Suarez from Triple-A Sacramento.
The fact he toiled for nearly a decade in the minors before reaching the majors made the news of his promotion that much sweeter.
