Mathew Hassan Kukah, the Catholic bishop of Sokoto dioces, has commended the Nigerian government and the army for successes recorded in the war against the Boko Haram sect that held the North-East in its bloody grip for years.
Speaking with FoxNews, the bishop said that “in the last six months, there has been significant progress.”
“We can proudly say, they no longer control territory and that they are literally on their last legs now,” he added.
Kukah stressed that Nigeria’s recent advances against the extremist group have been hard-won.
“Boko Haram has become outed and they are no longer a threat to the Nigerian society.
“[They] are now involved in some sort of back door negotiations with the federal government, and these negotiations are certainly tied to the release of the Chibok girls.”

The Boko Haram sect has existed for more than a decade, but gained international infamy in April, 2014, when insurgents kidnapped more than 200 schoolgirls from the town of Chibok in Borno state.
A few weeks ago, the missing girls appeared in a new video obtained by the international news channel CNN.
The video showed 15 of the Chibok girls who were alive and looked well taken care of. The recording was reportedly sent by kidnappers to negotiators as a proof of life.
However, the Nigerian army raised doubts on the authenticity of the video released by the insurgents.
The acting director defence information, Brig. Gen. Rabe Abubakar, said the video purported to be containing some of the Chibok girls could be concocted.
