In 2005, communities near military installations in Georgia hired consultants and other experts to help protect their military bases. Despite the hard work, the state lost Fort McPherson in Atlanta, Fort Gillem in Forest Park, Naval Air Station Atlanta in Marietta and Navy Supply Corps School in Athens. Nearly 13,000 workers were impacted by the closures. Now, state lawmakers have created a committee to prepare for another possible round of base closures.
