PDP Crisis: Gulak speaks out, read what he said
– Ahmed Gulak has said the appointment of a caretaker committee to run the affairs of the party was alien to the PDP’s constitution
– Ahmed Gulak described Sheriff’s removal as a nullity
Ahmed Gulak has declared himself as the chairman of PDP
A former special adviser on political matters to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Ahmed Gulak, has said the Peoples Democratic Party cannot be ruled by common sense, adding that the constitution of the party does not provide for a caretaker committee.
He argued that the appointment of a caretaker committee to run the affairs of the party was alien to the PDP’s constitution.
Gulak who was reacting to the removal of Senator Modu Sheriff, as the PDP national chairman at the party’s convention in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Saturday described Sheriff’s removal as a nullity.
Ali Modu Sheriff who was then the acting national chairman of the party was sacked at the botched national convention with the party naming a 7-man caretaker committee to manage the affairs of the party.
He said, “First of all, the PDP cannot be run by common sense, experience or by the powers that be. It must be run in accordance with the constitution. Chapter 33 of our constitution only mandates the national chairman to summon and convene a convention. Chapter 35 of same constitution states that the party can elect its leaders at the convention. This party cannot be run by common sense and whims and caprices of individuals.

“Sheriff was slammed with orders by two courts in Lagos and Abuja, which automatically prevents the PDP and its officers from conducting the Port Harcourt convention and election. With this order still valid, no reasonable, law-abiding party officers should go ahead and violate this order.
“That was why Sheriff convened a meeting of the national working committee of the party and clearly asked them if the convention could be conducted. They answered no. Then he issued a press release that the convention had been suspended. So the Port Harcourt convention was a mere gathering, not a convention. It was a violation of court order.”
Gulak said what the governors should have done was to have passed a vote of no confidence in him, rather than appoint a caretaker committee to pilot the affairs of the party.

“Let me make this abundantly clear. I was one of those that filed a suit in the court against the continued rule of Uche Secondus as the acting national chairman of the party. The national executive committee, in its wisdom, elected Sheriff. It was the governors that recommended Sheriff and said he should continue as the chairman. If they now discovered he was no longer their man, they should have used the NEC, through a legal process, to remove him. But they failed to do that,” he said.
Meanwhile, Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has granted an interim injunction restraining the immediate past national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff and Professor Adewale Oladipo who were removed from office at the PDP national convention held on Saturday May 21, 2016, from parading themselves as national officers of the party pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice brought before it by the PDP
