PDP crisis: Read what these opposing factions are plotting to do against Sheriff
– The ill-fated convention of the PDP in Port Harcourt saw leaders of the party further polarised into different factions
– Presently, the party has three factions led by Ahmed Makarfi, Jerry Gana and Ali Modu Sheriff respectively
– The Makarfi-led faction is seeking to make peace with Mantu-led committee constituted by Gana, in order to move the party forward
The Ahmed Makarfi-led caretaker committee, which was constituted by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national convention in Port Harcourt on Saturday, May 24, has reached out to the Senator Ibrahim Mantu-led panel, set up by some PDP elders in Abuja, to form an alliance on the way forward for the party.
Daily Sun reports that the two groups would meet soon to form a cohesive, strong unit which will neutralise whatever threat Senator Ali Modu Sheriff and his supporters pose to the survival of the party.
Sheriff was removed as the party’s national chairman at the convention held in Port Harcourt, though he insists that he remains chairman.
“Don’t forget that Makarfi was a member of the Concerned PDP Stakeholders at its formative stage.
“They know him as a bridge builder and they have tremendous respect for him. Senator Mantu and his team are anxious to meet him,” a source said.

At the weekend, the Mantu group made up of former and serving Board of Trustees (BoT) members had indicated readiness to open discussion with the caretaker committee put in place at the weekend at the convention held in Port Harcourt.
The Concerned PDP stakeholders led by a former secretary to the party’s BoT, Prof Jerry Gana, had appointed Mantu as caretaker chairman, saying his group was the authentic body that could speak for the opposition party.
He said neither the senator Markafi-led group nor the Sheriff faction of the PDP is the true representative.
“We have former and serving BoT members in our group. Therefore, we are the authentic PDP. Neither the Markafi or Sheriff factions can lay claim to PDP. We are PDP and will do everything to rescue the party,” Gana said.
The PD has three factions arising from contending interests. Gana is the leader of one faction, another faction is led by Makarfi, who is interim national chairman; and the third one by senator Sheriff, who insists he remains national chairman.

Report has it that Sheriff and few members of the dissolved National Working Committee (NWC) still loyal to him met at his residence in Abuja on Monday and at the end of the meeting, Sheriff left for another meeting in Lagos with a serving senator from the South-West.
Meanwhile, the headquarters of the PDP in Abuja has been sealed off by the police, following intelligence report that a faction of the party was plotting to engage thugs from across the country to join them in causing trouble and threaten public peace and security in Abuja.
