Why the NLC strike failed and Nigerians perception about Buhari
Editor’s note: The Nigerian Labour Congress called of its strike but even before it did, it already seemed like a lost battle as Nigerians did not participate activiely.
In this opinion, Bada Yusuf posits that Nigeria has a lot of problems to deal with and the president should be given a chance to give his best during this trying period.
Nigeria’s problem
The problem of our great nation seems to be beyond the mortal might of anybody. With adequate communication and education from Federal Government (FG) to make the people bid the idea of subsidy removal, all effort seems like a knife put into what brings us together which in turn, makes things fall apart. Our legislatures appear to be divided on this issue, knowing that there was no provision for subsidy in the 2016 budget.
President Muhammadu Buhari
President Muhammadu Buhari has appeared as myrtle of relief for the masses since the last general election as well as his inception into office; his anti corruption campaign has received several recognitions from the majority. Another commendable step of this administration is its push for the diversification of the economy. However, there are many opinion deconstructionists, while some of us are looking at the future advantage of deregulation of the oil sector; others are of the opinion that we don’t have to die before tomorrow.
Unfortunately, change is often an extremely complex series of labour. The transformation Lagos witnessed during Fashola’s Administration is a vivid example, the people of Oshodi and the motorcyclists can testify to this, when Fashola started, it was more than pain and the majority yearns but today, both the poor and the rich are enjoying the easement.

Also, we need to know that this administration is clearly distinct from the immediate administration. It is clear that its campaign against corruption actually divided people’s opinion in the protest against subsidy removal by this administration. Other vivid angle of distinct is its common sense package of relief fund for state government to pay workers; although, it is shrouded if any of the state governments have spent the money in the area they suppose to but we cannot say this government is describing our pains as “scam”.
What made the difference
We also need to remind ourselves that the reason of the last administration for removing fuel subsidy was due to corruption, claiming that there are ‘cabals’ that are beyond government power to fish out. On the contrary, this administration is not telling us that anybody is beyond its power; its reasons are based on economy and security, which have been a strong hindrance to common man relief. We are all aware of the fall in Naira to Dollar and the persistent vandalism in the south, and we all know the government is not sitting back on these germane issues.
Truly we have oil, and it is expected that as oil producing country, we should be expecting more from our oil wealth. From my own understanding, the capacity of our refineries cannot satisfy our consumption. Another thing is the weakness of Dollar to Naira, in which if we are producing our daily consumption by ourselves, it price will still be regulate by international market, that still make it scarcely possible for us to buy at a low price than 145.

Understanding the pains involved. From my own understanding of the subsidy removal, reversal of government decision is a great difficulty if the government is sincere with what it has says so far. Since our arms are our hope, we voted out the past government because of the lack of accountability and integrity, we can still do that in the coming election but we have to pay for false before we buy the truth. I then enjoin this government to defend its integrity as he has promised, and not make our desire for positive change a fiction. In the same vein, government should desist from restricting freedom of protest or expression of any people or groups; rather, it should communicate its decision effectively and convincingly to the aggrieved.
God bless Nigeria.
