Jaw-dropping amount of condoms ordered for sportsmen at Rio Olympics
– A huge number of condoms and lubricant will be distibuted during the Rio de Janeiro Olympics this year
– About 450,000 condoms will be made availbale — three times more than for the London Games four years ago
The International Olympic Committee has announced their plans to distribute a total of 450,000 free condoms — 350,000 condoms will be given to the male athletes and 100,000 to sportswomen.
It means each athlete from 10,500 participating would have at their disposal 42 condoms. Moreover, the commpetitors and stuff working at the this years games would be provided with 175,000 packets of lubricant.

The contraceptives will be available at a clinic in the Athletes’ Village and condom vending machines. The number of rubbers puts it at three times what was distributed during the Olympic Games in London in 2012.
The prolific giveaway is believed to be a preventive measure that was taken in response to the Zika virus outbreak in South America. The virus is mainly transmitted by mosquitos but there is also evidence of sexual transmission.
The 2016 Summer Olympics is a major international multi-sport event in the tradition of the Olympic Games due to take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 to 21 August 2016. Record numbers of countries are participating in a record number of sports.

These will be the first games to be held in a Portuguese-speaking country, the first to be held in the host country’s winter season, the first since 1968 to be held in Latin America, and the first since 2000 to be held in the Southern Hemisphere.
