'Little Syria' exhibit heading 'home' to New York

DETROIT (AP) — An exhibition about one of the earliest Arab American settlements heads to places near the old New York neighborhood where it first laid roots, as well as the spot where many immigrants first set foot in the U.S.

Museum officials say having the well-traveled exhibit back in Manhattan, set upon the historic immigrant gateway, offers an opportunity to share a largely unknown piece of history.

A neighborhood group worked with city officials to create and install a historical sign and six bench plaques in a nearby park commemorating the Washington Street neighborhood's history and hopes to do more.
