U.S. athletes speaking up about violence, racial issues
Serena Williams, Dwyane Wade and WNBA players are among the African American athletes who are talking about violence and race in America after the recent fatal police shootings of two black men and deaths of five police officers in Dallas.
Williams barely had time to savor her 22nd Grand Slam singles title after winning her seventh Wimbledon title in London on Saturday when her thoughts drifted across the Atlantic Ocean and settled on her nephews.
In Miami, NBA All-Star guard Dwyane Wade said he will join Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James to try to find ways to stop racial violence, adding that he has friends who are willing to commit to the cause.
In Minnesota, the WNBA’s Lynx will wear black warm-up shirts that say on the front, Change starts with us.
On the back of the shirt are the names Philando Castile and Alton Sterling, both fatally shot by police officers this past week.
The Carolina Hurricanes signed two first-round draft picks.
