#WomensDay: Zuma opens Living Women's Monument

President Jacob Zuma has opened the Living Women's Monument on Lillian Ngoyi Square in Pretoria.

Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma has opened the Living Women's Monument on Lillian Ngoyi Square in Pretoria.

He was accompanied by Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa.

At the monument are statues of Lillian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph, Rahima Moosa Sophie de Bruyn, leaders of the women's march to Unions Buildings 60 years ago.

Icons Abigail Kubheka and Dorothy Masuku were also in attendance, as well as ministers and other dignitaries.

From here, the crowd will participants will parade from the Lillian Ngoyi to the Union Buildings following the footsteps of the foremothers and celebrating achievements of women in all sectors.

The formal programme will commence at the Union Buildings South Lawns at 11 led by Ministers Susan Shabangu and Nathi Mthethwa.

Minister Bathabile Dlamini will give remarks as well as the chairwoman of the African Union, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma.

The cultural programme in the afternoon will have a lineup of female performers from various genres such as gospel, house and Kwaito.

Several roads in and around the CBD are closed.
