Stanford tight end Schultz tries to follow in big shoes
[...] with the numbers posted by other recent Stanford tight ends, Dalton Schultz’s seem rather pedestrian: 19 catches for 162 yards.
In a single season (2011), for example, Fleener had 34 catches for 667 yards and 10 TDs, Ertz 27 for 346 and four TDs, and Toilolo 25 for 343 and six TDs.
A year later, mainly with Kevin Hogan at quarterback, Ertz had 69 catches for 898 yards and six touchdowns and Toilolo added 24 for 393 and four TDs.
According to Pro Football Focus, Schultz ranks fourth among tight ends nationally as a run blocker and seventh overall.
[...] the whole offense was one of the worst in the country until things improved four games ago, partly because of Keller Chryst’s emergence at quarterback.
Stanford was down to two healthy tight ends, Schultz and Greg Taboada, for much of the season because five-star freshman Kaden Smith was nursing a high school injury and wound up redshirting.
“Honestly, the more touchdowns for Christian (McCaffrey) and the other running backs, I take a lot of pride in that, too,” he said.
The improved play of the offensive line, he said, allows Chryst to run through his progressions more easily, and that has produced more passes to the tight ends.
Schultz’s touchdown Saturday came on a screen pass.
