Wayne State University officer dies from gunshot wound

DETROIT (AP) — A Wayne State University police officer has died a day after he was shot in the head while on patrol near the campus.

Wilson said Rose, a five-year veteran of the university's police force, is the only Wayne State officer killed in the line of duty.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig had said Rose was on duty around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday when he radioed to say he was investigating possible thefts of navigation systems from vehicles and that he was about to speak to someone on a bike.

Authorities say ambush-style shootings on Sunday left one police officer dead in San Antonio, Texas, and another wounded in St. Louis, underscoring fears in the law enforcement community that the uniform is increasingly becoming a target.
