Broncos hire Vance Joseph to replace Kubiak
A runner-up two years ago, former 49ers assistant coach Vance Joseph is John Elway’s pick this time.
The 44-year-old ex-Colorado quarterback built a reputation as one of the league’s best secondary coaches as he worked his way through the ranks in San Francisco (2005-10), Houston and Cincinnati before serving as the Dolphins’ defensive coordinator last season and helping Miami end an eight-year playoff drought.
Joseph replaces Kubiak, 55, who stepped down over health concerns last week, capping a tumultuous season by the Broncos (9-7), who missed the playoffs a year after winning the Super Bowl.
Elway also interviewed Chiefs special teams coach Dave Toub and Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan — also interviewed by the 49ers — over the weekend.
The Buffalo Bills hired Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott to be their next head coach, replacing Rex Ryan.
Offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn, who served as interim coach in a season-ending loss to the New York Jets, was one of three other candidates to interview for the job.
Atlanta offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan and 49ers head-coaching candidate says he doesn’t know when he’ll be able to reschedule an interview with the Los Angeles Rams that was postponed last week because of weather.
