Why social media must be regulated - Sultan of Sokoto

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammed Saad Abubakar III, has warned Nigerians, particularly parents, to be mindful of things on the social media.

The sultan gave the warring when laying the foundation of the N508 million University of Ilorin Centre for Qur’an Memorisation, in Ilorin, Kwara state at the weekend, Leadership reports.

The Sultan, who was represented by the Emir of Shonga, Dr. Haliru Yahayah, said the medium was being used to fuel conflicts around the world and called for it to be regulated.

“Let us be careful about the social media; we must regulate it and sanction at home,” the sultan said.

The monarch who noted that the social media should not be totally discarded, said it was necessary to develop strategies on how to manipulate that space to advantage.

Recall that in 2016, a bill seeking to regulate the use of social media and short message service (SMS) in the country drew the irk of Nigerians who found a portion of the bill obnoxious.

After much backlash, the Nigerian Senate dismissed the bill on the ground that it was a hindrance to free speech.
