Ramadan in Nigeria ☾ How long does it last?
The Nigerian Muslims’ Ramadan fasting has started on Friday 26th of May. The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar officially announced to Muslims across the country to look for the new moon on Friday.

The new moon was sighted in several locations of the country, and the fasting started on Friday. The Secretary-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council For Islamic Affairs has asked the Muslims in Nigeria to be meaningful, prayerful and purposeful during Ramadan.
Interesting fact - the President-General makes the monthly declaration at the beginning of every lunar month. It was advised by the National Moon Sighting Committee.
“Following the advice of NMSC, the President-General enjoins the Nigerian Muslim Ummah to search for the crescent of Ramadan 1438 AH immediately after sunset on Friday, 26th May, 2017 equivalent to 29th Sha’ban 1438 AH,” Okonkwo said.

Besides Nigeria, the Saudi Arabia has announced the official date of the Ramadan fasting month. It said that the fasting month of Ramadan would start on Saturday, May 27. It is known that Saudi Arabia is thought to be the birthplace of Islam. Ramadan will last 29 to 30 days, based on the crescent of the moon.
Usually, the Ramadan is determined by the sighting of the new moon. During the time of Ramadan, Muslims don’t eat, drink or smoke from dawn to sunset. They also worship, perform special nightly prayers and read the Koran. Ramadan fasting is very important - it is one of the five pillars of Islam. Those are (besides fasting) praying everyday, alms-giving, pilgrimage to Mecca and declaration of Monotheism.
