Stanford to open NCAA baseball regional Thursday against Sac State
While 15 of the regional sites are scheduled to play Friday through Monday, the Stanford Regional starts Thursday because BYU doesn’t participate in any competition on Sundays.
If the Cougars reach the regional final, it would take place Monday.
Sac State, seeded fourth in the regional, is heading to a regional for only second time in program history.
The Hornets won the Western Athletic Conference tournament in convincing fashion, outscoring four opponents 36-8.
BYU, seeded third, tied for first place in the West Coast Conference at 20-7 and won the league tournament to end an NCAA tournament drought of 15 years.
The winner of the Stanford Regional will play the winner of the Long Beach Regional, which includes top-seeded Long Beach State (37-17-1), Texas (37-22), UCLA (30-25) and San Diego State (41-19).
Besides Stanford and UCLA, two other Pac-12 teams will play in the tournament — league champion and No. 1 overall seed Oregon State (49-4) and Arizona (37-19).
The Regional All-Session package, which includes tickets to all seven possible games, is on sale for $60 and $45 for youth/seniors -- a significant savings over single-game tickets.
No. 3 BYU (37-19), 1 p.m.; Friday, winners of Friday’s games play each other; losers play each other, times to be determined.
