Royals cool off A’s with 5-2 win in series opener
Stephen Vogt was pelted just below the wrist by Franklin Morales’ pitch in the ninth inning of a 5-2 loss to Kansas City at the Coliseum on Friday night.
Vogt described it as “nerve-racking” to get hit in the upper forearm area.
Hahn made it through six innings, giving up nine hits and five runs, three of which were earned.
The A’s troubles started in the second inning when Hahn gave up a home run to designated hitter Kendrys Morales.
Lorenzo Cain hit an RBI single that also advanced Alcides Escobar to second.
The passed ball cost Oakland when first baseman Ike Davis botched an awkward toss to Hahn, covering first base on Eric Hosmer’s groundball to Davis.
Davis was forced at second by Marcus Semien, who scored when center fielder Sam Fuld blasted a line drive to left field for a double, cutting the deficit to 4-1.
The A’s scored one more run in the ninth when Ben Zobrist hit a double to score Josh Phegley, who was pinch running for Vogt.
