Giants beat: Three promoted to Triple-A
The Giants on Friday moved three players from Double-A Richmond, Va., to Triple-A Sacramento: infielder Kelby Tomlinson, left-handed reliever Josh Osich and Mac Williamson, their top outfield prospect.
On their face, these moves seemed like standard midseason promotions, but there was more behind the last two.
Later on Friday, the Giants announced that reliever Jeremy Affeldt was going on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left shoulder that has bothered him for a while.
[...] manager Bruce Bochy revealed that center fielder Angel Pagan might go on the DL, too, with a left knee that he bruised while crashing into the wall in Thursday’s win against San Diego.
Williamson and Osich were playing well at Richmond, with Williamson posting excellent numbers (.293 average, five homers, .794 OPS) in a pitching league.
The big club might need both soon, so the organization wants to see them perform in a more advanced league.
Bochy called Williamson “intriguing” and perhaps the best option if Pagan goes on the DL, with Jarrett Parker not deemed ready and Juan Perez struggling and hurting.
“He’s been swinging the bat well in a tough league,” Bochy said of Williamson.
Affeldt has been ineffective for most of the season, compiling a 5.96 ERA and 1.81 WHIP in 33 games.
Bochy said Affeldt’s arm is “tired,” making it hard for him to pitch with the requisite arm speed.
The Giants recalled right-hander Mike Broadway from Sacramento to replace Affeldt.

Brandon Belt on Thursday became the first Giants hitter since Robby Thompson in 1986 to triple in his first two plate appearances in a game.
