Why is this conversation taking place? The question, posed in the opening chapter of Tom Drury's second novel, just about describes his raison d'ecrire. Then again, so does: "It's all here… the beautiful and the unfortunate." Or: "What if the rules and verses she had lived by, or tried to, didn't mean what she thought they did?
