Giants Splash: Casilla to get a rest, plus huge international signing

The Giants are making a lot of news this morning! The biggest is a signing in the international market, but more on that in a moment. [...] Buster Posey is fine and starting at first base in Thursday's series finale, Angel Pagan is off with sore legs and, most signficant, manager Bruce Bochy said he hopes to "back off" using closer Santiago Casilla for a few days because of a tired arm. Casilla did not retire a hitter while blowing a two-run ninth-inning lead Wednesday night and allowing Justin Bour's three-run, game-ending homer. On Thursday morning, Casilla had his right shoulder in ice. There was no bite or control on his fastball and he offspeed stuff was off. Thursday is "opening day" for the free-agent international signing period. The Giants are not dipping their toes in the water, as they usually do. The $6 million bonus far eclipses the team record for an international signing, $2.55 million for outfielder Rafael Rodriguez in 2008. The Giants' all-time draft bonus was $6.3 million for Buster Posey. Fox is a switch-hitting shortstop whom MLB.com ranked as the No. 3 international prospect in this year's class. A Giants scout will be there, and the hope is the signing will be completed later Thursday. According to MLB.com, the Giants have a international signing limit of $2,130,900 this seaason. Teams must pay a 100 percent tax on all bonus money over the limit.
