Liverpool legend Carra: Everton ace Barkley deserves greater recognition

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher says Everton midfielder Ross Barkley deserves greater recognition from inside the English game.

Carragher wrote in the Daily Mail: "Everton have a player who can do things out of the ordinary. The fans call Ross Barkley their 'diamond' and Roberto Martinez, his manager, has never made a secret of how highly he regards him, praising him to the roof whenever the chance allows.

"But the rest of the country? I'm not sure they feel the same. There seems to be a suspicion about what Barkley brings to a team and that could stem from the way Roy Hodgson always concentrates on things Barkley can't do rather than what he can.

"I would hope Hodgson's caution towards Barkley stems from him not wanting a young lad to get too carried away rather than an annoyance over how he plays, as there isn't another midfielder in the England team with his gifts"
