German hostage freed in Afghanistan
Kabul (dpa) - A German aid worker taken hostage two months ago in a Kabul street has been released, the head of the German development office (GIZ) confirmed Saturday."We are very relieved and happy that our colleague is again free," Tanja Goenner said.The exact details of the aid worker‘s release were not available, but she remains in the care of the German embassy in Kabul.German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier confirmed the woman‘s release on the sidelines of his visit to the Iranian capital of Tehran.According to Steinmeier the released aid worker was doing well "given the circumstances." He thanked the Afghan authorities and Germany‘s international partners in the country for their support.The development worker was abducted on a Kabul street on August 17. She had just left the office when two armed men shattered her car window and kidnapped her.The GIZ is Germany‘s largest development organization. It employs 180 Germans and 1,600 Afghans in Afghanistan. It has approximately 60 projects underway, primarily in the north part of the country.
