Kurdish community in Armenia protests outside  UN office in Yerevan  over persecution of Kurds in Syria

0
ArmInfo. The Kurdish community of Armenia held a protest outside the UN office in Yerevan to denounce the military pressure and persecution of Kurds in Syria.  Protesters demanded that the UN take immediate action to protect universal human rights as Syrian government forces, supported by Turkey, seek to regain control over the country's northeast.

Dozens of citizens carrying Kurdistan flags marched through Northern Avenue to the UN building in central Yerevan. During the demonstration, participants chanted slogans against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa. The protest was attended by Knyaz Hasanov, a member of the Armenian Parliament and representative of the Kurdish national minority.

Liana Mkhoyan, editor of a Kurdish newspaper, told journalists that Kurdish communities worldwide are uniting to protest the terrorism and violence targeting the Kurdish population in Syria.  "We are holding this protest at the UN office because we want to see humane treatment. In the 21st century, we are once again facing genocide," Mkhoyan stated. "We demand the protection of human rights and the preservation of our language and independence."

It should be noted that This demonstration follows the resurgence of fighting between Kurdish forces and the Syrian army in December 2025. On January 10, 2026, forces controlled by the new Syrian government, with Turkish support, seized the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh districts and subsequently forced Kurdish units to retreat from Dayr Hafir.
