Institution of citizenship completely distorted in Armenia - minister
ArmInfo. The institution of citizenship in Armenia is completely distorted. This was stated by RA Minister of Internal Affairs Arpine Sargsyan at a press conference on February 13, commenting on the Strong Armenia party's nomination of businessman and philanthropist Samvel Karapetyan for Prime Minister.
Speaking about Karapetyan's dual citizenship, the Minister, without naming him, noted that it is difficult to imagine combining the interests of different countries in the post of head of government. Arpine Sargsyan noted that the institution of dual citizenship is distorted, and the example cited is obvious in practice. The Minister added that the institution of dual citizenship should be preserved, but not for persons holding constitutional positions, including the Prime Minister. "The candidate must be someone whose interests are focused solely on the Republic of Armenia. A passport isn't just a document; citizenship entails an oath of allegiance to the state, and in the case of a citizen of several countries, it's difficult to imagine which country's priorities will be the focus," the Minister of Internal Affairs noted.
As a reminder, the Strong Armenia party nominated Samvel Karapetyan, president of the Tashir Group of Companies, as its candidate for Prime Minister of Armenia the day before.
