ALC Students Step Up Year-Round
At Alice Lloyd College, students tackle many responsibilities. Not only do they study and strive for success in the classroom, but many represent the College as athletes, and all students serve the College as student workers.
ALC students have participated in work study since our founding over a hundred years ago. In the beginning, Alice Lloyd promised an education to any student so long as they were willing to work for it. During those early days, a lot needed to be done, and Alice didn’t have much help, so it was crucial that students perform tasks essential to keeping the school running.
Today, this hasn’t changed. The Student Work Program is still going strong, and ALC students do more than attend classes—they help keep the College running. Our students are essential to campus operations and fill various roles from administrative offices and academic departments to maintenance crews and food services.
During the school year, every department on campus is supported by student workers. In these roles, students work for their education and learn practical skills for professional development. Their work reflects the College’s values of self-help, service to others, and they learn leadership skills and responsibility while developing their character.
When summer arrives and the majority of students return home, their absence is felt across campus. Without student workers to fill the vital roles left behind, the workload would shift to the full-time staff. Recognizing the challenges this would create, the College crafted a solution that presents a unique opportunity for students: ALC offers summertime positions for students.
This program offers students the opportunity to stay on campus during the summer months as employees and continue the work they perform so well during the school year. Whether its assisting in the library, helping with landscaping, working in admissions, or preparing campus facilities for the fall semester, these summer positions are essential to the smooth operation of the College.
The benefits of summer work go both ways. Students earn income and can stay in the dorms for free during the break, all while developing relationships and learning important skills that will help them in life after ALC. The College continues to thrive with the help of familiar, dedicated hands. It’s a win-win that strengthens the bond between students and their school while reinforcing the values that make ALC unique.
In many ways, the summer work program exemplifies what makes ALC special. It’s a place where students are more than learners—they are leaders. It’s where education is matched by action, and where character and work ethic are always present. Helping hands are everywhere, even during school breaks.
