ALC Graduate Emma Bates Selected for Appalachian Health Fellowship
Emma Bates, a 2025 graduate of Alice Lloyd College, has been selected for the prestigious Appalachian Health Graduate Fellowship Program, a regional initiative designed to support graduate students who are committed to serving the health needs of Central Appalachia.
Emma, a native of Blackey, Kentucky, earned a biology degree from ALC and will continue her education at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry this fall. Her selection for the Appalachian Health Fellowship reflects not only her academic excellence, but also her commitment to improving healthcare in the Appalachian region.
“I am beyond grateful to have been selected as a recipient of the Appalachian Health Fellowship,” said Emma. “I also appreciate every opportunity ALC has provided to help me pursue graduate education, and I am eager to begin this journey toward my long-term goal of returning home to Eastern Kentucky to deliver high-quality healthcare.”
The Appalachian Health Graduate Fellowship, supported by the Appalachian Regional Commission and administered by the University of Kentucky Center of Excellence in Rural Health, is awarded to students pursuing graduate-level training in health fields who demonstrate a passion for service and a plan to return to Appalachia after completing their studies. Fellows receive financial support, mentorship, and leadership development opportunities during their time in graduate school.
Emma’s story is a powerful example of Alice Lloyd College’s mission in action. For over 100 years, the College has prepared young men and women to lead and serve in the Appalachian region. Today, 83% of ALC graduates return home after graduation.
“Emma’s heart for service and her desire to give back to the mountains exemplify what it means to walk Purpose Road,” said President Jim Stepp. “We are proud to celebrate her success.”
As Alice Lloyd College continues to educate servant leaders for Appalachia, stories like Emma’s highlight the life-changing impact of an ALC education.
