Aston Villa make major transfer decision with Manchester United bomb squad man targeted: report

0

Aston Villa could be set to offer a permanent deal to one of their loan players at the end of the season, according to reports.

Villa’s quiet summer transfer window ended with three signings on deadline day, when they brought in free agent Victor Lindelöf, Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott and Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho.

They have an obligation to buy Elliott from the Reds that will be triggered by his tenth appearance for Villa but Sancho’s agreement is a straight loan without future considerations. The 25-year-old is then expected by some to find a new club in Europe or even the Saudi Pro League or Major League Soccer at the end of his United contract.

But Villa could look to offer Sancho a permanent contract, according to a report.

“Despite only playing 82 minutes for the club so far this season, Sancho is apparently on Emery’s radar for a permanent move next summer. His contract at Man United will be up, so the club can snap him up without paying a penny,” reports National World.

Risky move for Villa?

Villa’s transfer decisions will be scrutinised more closely than ever in the next couple of windows after the departure of Monchi and appointment of Roberto Olabe as the club’s new president of football operations. The report suggests that Emery is behind the possible pursuit of Sancho after just 82 minutes off the bench in a Villa shirt.

There have been suggestions elsewhere that Sancho wasn’t a priority signing for Emery and arrived at Villa with something to prove even to his own manager.

Signing Sancho permanently wouldn’t be without risk. He still has time on his side and potential for real growth, and there’s every chance he’ll find his moment to thrive again after showing flashes of his old self on loan at Chelsea and his former club, Borussia Dortmund.

But the criticisms of Sancho at United, albeit a club that has made an absolute dog’s dinner of managing its players of late, are cause for concern.

Sancho has made a positive start at Villa and came close to scoring a debut goal when he hit the post in the Carabao Cup third round tie at Brentford.

The stumbling block, as ever, could be Sancho’s wages. He reportedly earns as much as £250,000 per week, which isn’t a sustainable amount for Villa on a permanent deal.

That doesn’t necessarily mean they couldn’t reach an agreement but Sancho is likely to have options abroad that don’t come with the same compromise, notably in North America and the Middle East. Time will tell on that front.
