Aston Villa player ratings get a big boost as fans hail improved Premier League performance against Fulham
Aston Villa fans have marked their team’s first Premier League win of the campaign with a set of ratings that make much better reading.
Villa supporters submitted their player ratings via our AVF ratings form, which we’ll be inviting you to do via our social media throughout the 2025/26 season.
The process is simple. We’ll share a link at full time to ask fans to give every Villa player a score out of 10 – without a zero because we’re grown-ups and so are you – before adding in my own ratings from Aston Villa Review and taking an average.
These average scores will be used for Power Rankings each month and, ultimately, to crown a Player of the Season.
Villa v Fulham player ratings
Emiliano Martínez – 5.7
Martínez nearly coughed up a goal but was otherwise as solid as usual and couldn’t have done much with Fulham’s goal, so I think sub-6.0 is a little on the harsh side.
Matty Cash – 6.7
This was another solid performance from a player who gets criticised a lot but has been in pretty decent shape so far this season. The hope now is the average can climb up to his level and then beyond.
Ezri Konsa – 7.7
Konsa wasn’t culpable for the Fulham goal in any obvious way and spared Martínez’s blushes with a tremendous goal-line clearance in the second half.
Tyrone Mings – 5.5
Replaced after half an hour, the withdrawal of Mings and introduction of Pau Torres has been credited with changing the game by a number of observers.
Lucas Digne – 6.3
Despite the views of some Villa fans to the contrary, I thought Digne improved broadly in line with his teammates on Sunday, albeit without the same direct impact on the game as the other defenders.
John McGinn – 8.3 – MOTM
Super John McGinn, Aston Villa captain. A great goal and a top performance just when his team needed it. Now that’s a leader. You don’t sell that for £18 million.
Lamare Bogarde – 6.3
I’ve seen mixed reviews of Bogarde’s fortunes in midfield but I agree it was somewhere in the middle. Josh King outsmarted him in the first half but Bogarde was really good after the break.
Evann Guessand – 6.7
Villa’s latest permanent signing seems to me to be getting gradually better with every game. From the consecutive starts bestowed upon Guessand, we can assume Unai Emery sees it the same way.
Harvey Elliott – 5.7
Elliott remains a conundrum. Signed because of his technical ability and football intelligence, he is yet to pin down a starting spot. I think 5.7 is a little low but there’s no doubt Emery got his half time substitution spot on.
Morgan Rogers – 6.4
I went for a 6 for Rogers on Sunday, which sounds like damning him with faint praise but was in fact an acknowledgement that he grew into the match, looked much sharper, and was twice as good as last time.
Ollie Watkins – 7.6
After a difficult couple of months, Watkins scored a fabulous goal to equalise against Fulham and looked more like his old self with every touch thereafter.
Substitutes
Pau Torres – 6.8
Torres has had two good games back-to-back, this time for an hour off the bench, and it’s just as well. Mings’ injury will give him the chance to lock the left centre-back spot up but only if he retains these levels.
Emi Buendía – 7.8
Villa’s goalscoring substitute, unlikely hero and most resilient professional. Buendía had his best game in a Villa shirt and it came after long-term injury, a loan in Germany and a very real possibility he’d be sold. Bravo.
Boubacar Kamara – 7.0
Kamara started the game on the bench after returning from injury from the start against Bologna. He was slick and effective in midfield when he came on.
Donyell Malen – 5.0
On as a late substitute. I didn’t grade him. You gave him a 5.0.
Victor Lindelöf – 5.0
Ditto.
